Why DCFCU is “Better Than a Bank”! |
Credit unions and banks are similar financial institutions, but the primary difference between the two is that credit unions are owned by the customers or “members” who they serve, rather than by a select group of shareholders. Since credit unions are not-for-profit, they are operated exclusively for the benefit of their members. The recession has caused many difficulties at major banks and financial institutions that relied on risky loans and investments aimed at generating greater profits for their shareholders, but credit unions have remained relatively unscathed because they focus on traditional banking services and conservative loans. In fact, a popular personal finance columnist for MSN Money wrote an article in April 2009 entitled "Ditch your bank for a credit union," which explains the differences between banks and credit unions and suggests that credit unions offer a better alternative for most.
